Internal Medicine

Animal Specialty Center provides a complete range of advanced internal medicine services for pets. This allows us to diagnose, prevent, and treat a wide range of conditions - including difficult and complex cases, regardless of the cause, such as:

What We Offer

Our board-certified internists and residency-trained doctors have advanced training that includes a four-year college degree, four years of veterinary college, a one-year internship in veterinary internal medicine, and a three-year residency program. In most cases, our internists see pets on a referral basis either at the suggestion of their primary care veterinarians, or through a discussion with the veterinarian as initiated at the client’s request.

Our services start with a general consultation that can include one or more areas in the wide spectrum of internal medicine including hematology, hepatology, gastroenterology, nephrology, rheumatology, endocrinology, gerontology. The combination of two or more of these areas usually occurs in many of our patients. Your internist then works closely with other members of your pet’s care team that can include veterinary surgeons, neurologists, oncologists, dentists and cardiologists to ensure the best care for your pet.

The following is a list of internal medicine services that have available: 
  • Endoscopy of the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory systems
  • Blood gas analysis and oximetry
  • Ultrasound of the abdomen and chest (non-cardiac), and other anatomic structures (thyroid and parathyroid glands, muscles, joints, tumors)
  • 24-hour critical care coverage and post-procedural monitoring
  • Ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration and needle biopsy
  • Parenteral nutrition techniques
  • Pet-dedicated MRI facility
  • CT imaging with fluoroscopy
  • Digital radiography
  • Infusion pumps
  • Laparoscopy and thoracoscopy
  • Immunomodulatory treatment
  • Stabilization of critical conditions
  • Central venous pressure monitoring and Doppler blood pressure
  • Assessment and management of multiple concurrent organ system disorders
  • Experience in management of geriatric patients and their special needs
  • Selection and placement of feeding tubes for nutritional therapies
  • Advanced interventional stenting procedures
